In an era where artificial intelligence (AI) has made translations widely accessible, it can be hard to imagine why certified translations still come with a relatively high price tag. Yet, for now, that is unlikely to change.
While AI is undoubtedly useful and cost-effective, it does not assume responsibility for the quality or accuracy of the translation. When it comes to translations used for official purposes, a living, breathing human being must stand behind the work, taking full responsibility for the text produced. That person is a certified translator or court interpreter, who must meet specific criteria, including:
- University Master Degree
- Exceptional (and certified) knowledge of the language
- A clean criminal record
- Specialized training for court interpreting, among others.
Despite the rapid evolution of translation technologies, changes in how the government functions occur more slowly. Therefore, any translations used to secure certain rights or legal status must be certified.
How Are Certified Translation Prices Determined?
In Croatia, the cost of certified translations depends on the number of characters. One page of translation equals 1,500 characters (with spaces) and is charged according to the Rulebook on Permanent Court Interpreters at a rate of €25.88 + VAT per page.
